2nd session with my personal trainer was today

Today we focused more on arms and core work. I’m definitely feeling it and it’s a really good push and I know I wouldn’t be pushing myself this hard with my trainer helping me. Going to be super sore tomorrow though!

Images of Thin Bodies Impact Body Preferences →

Advertising and media companies often get lobbied to use models that represent the average woman’s body—rather than ultra-thin models, whose images may influence some women to have an unhealthy relationship with food. Now a study supports that idea that observed images affect what people consider to be acceptable body types. The report is in the journal PLoS ONE.

Researchers surveyed subjects about their opinions of their own bodies and those of others. Then they presented the subjects with photos of large or thin women. Some photos were of beauty queens in evening gowns or other high-status clothing. Other photos were of women who were either very large or very thin, wearing neutral grey leotards. Following those viewings, the subjects were again surveyed about their body preferences.

Subjects who originally preferred thin bodies only increased their preference for thinness after being shown photos of thin women. But they decreased their preference for thin bodies after being shown photos of larger women. The attire of the women in the photos made no difference to the subject’s latter preference.

The researchers say that this study provides strong evidence that images of female bodies promoted by the media and ad agencies could have a real impact on women’s preference and subsequent thoughts about body type.

Skier Jonny Mosely tweeted this picture of a sign that helped joggers equate their physical exertion to caloric intake. Depressingly you have to log 4.5 miles of running to work off one slice of pizza. It’s a reminder that you can’t out-exercise a bad diet.

Actually you can out-exercise a bad diet, pro athletes do it all the time. But that’s not the point, the point is that stuff like this turns food into the enemy and exercise into punishment. It’s useful to be aware of calories to be mindful of your diet, but a 4 mile run is not a consequence of enjoying a slice of pizza and you are not obligated to burn off every single tasty thing you eat. Exercise because it’s good for you and you want to, not because you’ve been bad and you have to.

Lies fitblr has told me and how to combat them:

Don't keep junk food in the house and you won't be tempted to eat it:Don't keep junk food in the house and you'll end up taking out the entire jar of nut butter with a spatula since it's the only thing around.
Binging is because of lack of self-control:Binging is because of unresolved emotional tensions or not allowing yourself to eat what you really want, when you really want it.
Have a cheat meal once in a while to cut down cravings:Don't put any foods off limits and they'll stop being so special.
Don't add sugar to anything because processed sugar is BAD:If adding a spoonful of sugar to your cocoa powdered oatmeal will satisfy your chocolate craving, don't pretend that unsweetened chocolate will satisfy you.
White flour is BAD, whole grains are GOOD:Food is not inherently good or bad. Food is neutral.
When you feel a craving coming on, it's because you're lacking x nutrient, so eat this food:When you feel a craving for chocolate coming on, eat half a chocolate bar instead of greek yogurt, a big bowl of fruit, three pieces of ezekiel bread, a cup of nuts, and three chocolate bars anyway.
Scrolling through pages of fitness models will motivate you to get in shape:Scrolling through pages of fitness models will cause feelings of inadequacy and self-disrespect.
Lack of discipline and self-control are responsible for fitness failures:Depriving yourself of what you really want and getting burned out on exercise are responsible for fitness failures.
You can look like this fit person if you stay on track:You will look like what healthy you is supposed to look like when you do exercise that makes you happy and eat foods that make your body AND mind feel good!
